Convert GPX to shapefile

Jeff Bullard-2
Are there any plans to include a converter for GPX data in FW Tools?  I have written in Python a converter from GPX to shapefile using OGR module.  It currently converts only routes, since that was my need.  I'm considering extending the script to a full converter for waypoints and tracks also.

Just wondering if someone has already done this and I have missed it.  I found gpx2shp written in C but it hasn't worked for me.  I've seen many other GPS users are looking for the same solution.

Does the Python distro in FWTools include SAX?  I've played around a
bit going from GPX to KML using that, and that was pretty straight
forward.  Pretty sure going to .shp wouldn't be too hard either, but
not sure about the other vector formats that OGR supports.

I guess it would be best to add this as a GDAL tool like gdal_gpx.py or something.  It seems extremely simple so I wonder why it has not been done.  Hopefully someone is working on it.

I don't think it's desirable to have another tool for that purpose.
There is GPSBabel which does the job.
What's missing is the OGR driver that would integrate GPX format
into the GDAL framework.
IMO that would be really helpful.

I agree with you Mateusz.  Hopefully someone can come up with funding
for that work.

Re: Convert GPX to shapefile

In reply to this post by Mateusz Loskot
GPSBabel does not handle shapefiles (check their
website).  I have read that some folks are using
GPSBabel in conjunction with GRASS or possibly QGis to
create the shapefile.  As I understand the procedure
goes like this:  take the GPX file and convert to CSV
file with GPSBabel, then import into GRASS and output
a shapefile.  Or something like that.  I was very VERY
frustrated that something that should be such a basic
tool is scarcely available, if at all.  After scouring
the web looking and trying different software, I
finally had to write my own Python script for this.  I
tried both GPSBAbel and gpx2shp.  GPSBabel doesn't
support shapefile and gpx2shp gives error messages and
is out of development.

You say its not desirable to have another tool for
that purpose, but I challenge anyone to name a single
working tool that will accomplish this.

Yes, I know, but it does export to GPX (from many GPS formats, KML, etc.).

Implicitly, I was thinking about using gpx2shp

http://gpx2shp.sourceforge.jp/

1. GPSBabel converts from X format to GPX
2. gpx2shp converts from GPX to SHP

There is source code of gpx2shp available, so anyone can grab it
and continue development.
If there isn't anyone interested, may be people does not care
about GXP to SHP export, I may only suppose.

Yes, I said that, but I wasn't aware of any problems with gpx2shp.
It simply worked for me when I tried some time ago.
Obviously, if this tool does not work well, the situation has changed.

Re: Convert GPX to shapefile

Jeff Bullard-2
I supppose you are right there is not much interest
else it would be done already.  Mostly the interest
for GPX to shp exists among hikers/backpackers and
hobbyists. Most of these folks are not technical like
the GIS programmers around here.

My personal interest in GPX/shp is for a National Park
website, where users can upload&download their GPX
tracks/routes and render them along with other GIS
data about the park such as topography.

My Python script is working but I haven't a clue how
to share it with other folks because it depends on
GDAL and OGR, which is a hurdle for the common user.

Sorry for the attitude - I'll just have to develop my
programming skills and do this one myself.

JB

Has anyone solved the Garmin to shapefile conversion?   I am using Garmin 76CSx to USB on mac osx 10.5.8 with GPSBabel+ which converts but even with Qgis 1.3.0 I can't get the tracks or WPs to show correctly and can't even load files to Arcexplorer Java edition for education 2.3 since they are not shapefiles.  I have used an older Garmin on a pc to read and convert GPS data to shapefiles then moved files to an older mac. Now nothing works. Do I need different software?  alan
